Why Equine Assisted Therapy?

"There is something about the outside of a horse that is good for the inside of a man."(Sir Winston Churchill)

Offering a very different experience than traditional talk therapy EAT brings people outdoors, surrounded by nature, animals and fresh air. It brings the opportunity to use all of our senses whilst learning to connect with another being and yourself and improve your overall well-being. We all experience stressful situations every day, however, learning how to cope with those is not something they teach us in school.

Horses can pick up on our feelings often before we actually are aware of them, and just by being in their presence they provide a nurturing and non- judgemental environment..

.

What is Equine Assisted Therapy?

Being in the presence of horses can have profound psychological benefits for humans. Inviting a horse's presence to a therapeutic environment can provide support, regulation and a new perspective.

At Sabrina Stephens Equine Assisted Therapy we incorporate a trauma-informed approach and can help you to increase awareness of emotions and behaviours that are no longer serving you well.Working with horses in this way, can support an increase in self-awareness, as horses live in a state of full-bodied awareness. Horses are fantastic models for what it is like to be grounded, using their feelings as information, expressing emotions and returning to a regulated state.

Horses are prey animals, have highly evolved senses, and an ability to read body language, sense slight physiological changes within humans and other horses means they can often mirror the true experience of those around them, providing an often unique opportunity to experience authentic contact, free of judgement or filters. This experience means that horses can provide immediate feedback which can facilitate increased self-awareness.

Horses are herd animals and their desire to seek connection can teach us about how we show up in relationships and provide safe opportunities to explore relational themes such as trust, boundaries, control, respect, vulnerability, attachment, and intimacy.
